Winona State University has been named to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

This is the second time WSU has received the designation “with distinction,” and the fourth consecutive year the university has been named to the Honor Roll. WSU is one of only 110 schools nationwide selected to receive the recognition of Honor Roll with Distinction.

Seventy percent of WSU students were involved in service to the community during the 2010-11 academic year, contributing a total of 184,078 hours of service through volunteer projects and service-learning class projects. Students worked with a variety of organizations and populations, including YWCA’s Ophelia House, college students with disabilities, Hiawatha Valley Mental Health, Catholic Charities, Frozen River Film Festival and Winona Health Foundation.

Community Service Honor Roll honorees are chosen based on a series of criteria, including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

The honor roll is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
