Winona State University will host a public lecture with Michael Kimmel, author of WSU’s 2012-13 Common Book “Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Somsen Auditorium.
The lecture will be followed by a book signing, and Kimmel will participate in several other events Oct. 9-10 during his visit to the Winona State campus.
Prior to his evening presentation, Kimmel will visit Tamara Berg’s Introduction to Women and Gender Studies class 2- 2:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in Somsen Auditorium. The class will be open to the public, and visitors should be prepared to discuss “Guyland.” RSVP to Berg at tberg@winona.edu if you plan to attend.
Kimmel will also participate in a panel discussion from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the East Hall, Kryzsko Commons. Participants include Jennifer Chernega (professor of sociology), Dan Lintin (professor of communication studies), and Gar Kellom (Director of Student Support Services), and the discussion will be moderated by Gretchen Michlitsch (professor of English).
A screening of “The Invisible War,” an investigative documentary about rape in the U.S. military, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, Science Laboratory Center 120. For more information, visit http://invisiblewarmovie.com/.

Kimmel is a prominent gender studies scholar and has authored and edited more than 20 books in the field. He is a professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has also worked as a consultant for corporations and public-sector organizations around the world on gender equality issues.
“Guyland” explores the complex and often troubling social world in which boys ages 16 to 26 are expected to make the transition to manhood. The book is based on extensive sociological and historical research as well as Kimmel’s interviews and conversations with hundreds of young men and women across the country.
